Alma turns back Albion in men's basketball

ALMA, Mich. – Nathaniel Collins scored a career-high 21 in Albion College's 89-85 loss to Alma College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action.

The score was tied on seven occasions on the second half.

Ryan Stevens, Kevin Scheibert and Kevin Gamble scored baskets as Alma reeled off a 6-0 run to take the lead for good, 76-70, with five minutes left.

Collins buried a 3-point basket to draw Albion within three, 79-76, but it misfired on its next three shots as it had chances to pull closer.

Corey Wheeler knocked down a 3-point basket as Albion trailed, 82-79, with 1 ½ minutes to play, but it could not get a stop on the defensive end.

Ryan Stevens knocked down 5-of-6 shots from the line in the last 27 seconds to protect the Alma lead down the stretch.

Collins had an efficient shooting day, hitting 8-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

Wheeler added 14, moving his career total to 1,032, good for 19th place on Albion's all-time list. He trails Scott Clement by 34 for 18th place.

Quinton Armstrong (12) and Jamezell Davis, Jr. (11) also scored in double figures for the Britons.

Stevens (21 points, 14 assists) and Scheibert (20 points, 11 rebounds) produced double-doubles to lead Alma.

Albion (7-14 overall, 4-6 MIAA) begins its final homestand of the season Wednesday night at 7:30 against Kalamazoo College.
