Volleyball splits Friday non-league matches

WHEATON, Ill. – Setter Grace VanDorn dished out 44 assists in two matches on Friday to move into second place on the Albion College volleyball all-time list.

A junior from North Aurora, Ill., Van Dorn has dished out 2,435 assists in her 2 ½ seasons with the Britons, leaving her 464 shy of the record Ami Milligan set from 2013-2016 (2,899).

VanDorn finished with double-doubles as Albion defeated North Central College in five sets (25-13, 16-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-7) and lost to Wheaton College in three (25-21, 25-13, 25-22).

Albion hit .571 with nine kills and one error in 14 attacks as it surged to the victory over North Central. Shelby Palmer and Chloe Webber knocked down three kills apiece and Kate Winter added two kills and assisted on a block in the decisive set.

Webber hit .393 with 14 kills and three errors in 28 attacks while chipping in with a pair of block assists and a pair of aces.

Winter stuffed the box score with 14 kills, five digs and four blocks, and Kelsey Gustafson (12 kills, 21 digs) and VanDorn (33 assists, 13 digs) achieved double-doubles.

Libero Jenna Khoury served up a career-high five aces and came up with 27 digs (one shy of her career high).

Gustafson was the only hitter was the only Briton to reach double figures in kills (12) against Wheaton. VanDorn came up with 11 assists and 16 digs and Khoury added 18 digs and four aces.

Albion, owner of a 13-6 record, returns to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association competition Tuesday night at 6:30 with a trip to Alma College.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
