VanDorn moves up Albion's all-time assists list

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College subdued a scrappy Mount Saint Joseph University squad 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-12 in non-league volleyball action at Kresge Gymnasium Friday evening.

In the process, setter Grace VanDorn moved into third place on Albion's all-time assists list. She dished out 23 assists to move her career total to 2,285. The junior from North Aurora, Ill., is pursuing Eliza Lee (2,404) and Ami Milligan (2,899).

VanDorn completed her 43rd career double-double (and sixth of the season) with 17 digs.

Sophomore setter Ava Smith (12 assists, 10 digs) also finished a double-double, while senior outside hitter Kelsey Gustafson (nine kills, nine assists) came up just shy.

Kate Winter and Chloe Webber led Albion at the net with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.

Albion gained control of the match by hitting .221 (24-7-77) in the final two sets of the match.

The Britons won five consecutive points with Kameron Haley serving in the third set. After a bad sets by Mount Saint Joseph on consecutive points, Webber terminated a point, Gustafson put up a solo block and Haley served an ace.

Albion put up its block in the fourth set. Webber knocked down a solo block and Jesse Hepner assisted her on two more blocks. Winter also tallied a solo block.

Haley and Webber also served aces in the final set.

Albion improved to 8-5 with the victory. The Britons will make the short drive to Olivet College tomorrow morning for an 11 a.m. start against Franklin (Ind.) College.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
