Britons split Friday volleyball matches

RICHMOND, Ind. – Kelsey Gustafson achieved her third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 12 digs to lead Albion College to a 25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 25-21 victory over Marietta College and a split of its Friday matches on the first day of the Earlham College Invitational.

Before the match with Marietta, Earlham defeated Albion 25-19, 25-23, 25-22. Setter Ava Smith terminated a point as Albion forged a tie at 20 in the second set, but the Britons were not able to win the key points down the stretch. Alexa Hitchko and Kate Winter led the Albion offense with nine kills apiece. Setter Grace VanDorn completed a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs.

Winter collected eight more kills against Marietta, while Chloe Webber chipped in with seven kills and three blocks.

Albion, now 6-3 on the season, will return to the court for Saturday matches against Spaulding (Ky.) University and Denison (Ohio) University.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
