Volleyball splits Saturday non-league matches

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College played its final non-league women's volleyball matches of the season Saturday.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire defeated Albion (25-12, 25-22, 25-17)

Eau Claire, ranked 14th in Division III, committed only one hitting error in taking the first set with a .484 hitting percentage (16-1-31).

Kate Winter terminated a point and joined Marie Pregenzer on a block as Albion whittled a seven-point deficit to two. Albion inched within one, 23-22, on an Eau Claire attack error. The Blugolds slammed the door on the Briton rally as Madelyn Pashibin terminated a point and Albion committed an error on set point.

Taylor Rosenthal assisted on two blocks as Albion took a 5-3 lead in the third set. Makenzie Bachmann terminated consecutive points to ignite a Blugold rally and they steadily pulled away from Albion.

Pregenzer, Rosenthal and Winter all finished with five kills for Albion.

Pashibin led Eau Claire with 10 kills.

Albion defeated Denison (23-25, 25-19, 29-27, 25-19)

Pregenzer, Rosenthal and Winter all reached double figures in kills and setter Grace VanDorn completed a double-double.

Rosenthal, who finished with 16 kills, produced the most important point of the match when she terminated a play to protect Albion's four-point lead in the fourth set.

 Albion staved off  four set points in the third set. Trail 24-22, Winter knocked down a kill and assisted Pregenzer on a block. Winter also terminated the point as Albion forged a tie at 25. A Denison service error, a Shelby Palmer kill and a Denison attack error were the final three points of the set.

Pregenzer hit .343 (15-3-35), collected four blocks and served up two aces. Winter added 14 kills. VanDorn dished out a season-high 55 assists to go along with 10 digs and three service aces.

Up Next

Albion, 15-11 overall, will host Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Trine University at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
