Volleyball splits Saturday matches in Ohio

TIFFIN, Ohio – Taylor Rosenthal produced 19 kills and five blocks, Kate Winter chipped in with 17 kills and three blocks and Kelsey Gustafson contributed 16 kills, four blocks and a pair of service aces as Albion College split its Saturday non-league volleyball matches.

Albion defeated Otterbein (25-11, 25-20, 25-20)

Otterbein committed 10 hitting errors and Albion terminated 12 points as it coasted in the first set.

Gustafson and Rosenthal combined on a block and each knocked down a kill as Albion ripped off a seven-point run to build an 14-6 lead in the third set.

Setter Grace VanDorn, who finished with 30 assists and 12 digs, smartly distributed the ball to Gustafson, Rosenthal, Shelby Palmer and Kate Winter. All four of the hitters finished with eight kills apiece.

Heidelberg defeated Albion (25-15, 25-23, 25-21)

Albion led 19-15 in the second set on Winter's kill. Amy Feczer powered Heidelberg, terminating two points, as the score was tied at 20. Heidelberg scored the final three points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

VanDorn served an ace as Albion led, 7-3, in the third set. Marie Pregenzer and Palmer combined on a block to ignite a three-point run as Albion led, 14-10. Heidelberg scored eight in a row to build an 18-14 lead and it closed out the match from there.

Rosenthal led Albion with 11 kills, while VanDorn added another double-double with 26 assists and 16 digs.

Albion, now 12-10 overall, returns home for a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association match against Kalamazoo College. It's a 7 p.m. Tuesday match at Kresge Gymnasium.
