HOLLAND, Mich. – Hope College ripped off a 5-1 run to build a lead in the first set and the Flying Dutch took off from there, scoring a 25-20, 25-12, 25-13 victory over Albion College in Wednesday night Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association volleyball action at the DeVos Fieldhouse.
Albion scored three in a row, capped by Monica Shuk's service ace, to forge a tie at 8 in the first set. Albion trailed 11-10 when Hope had a bad serve.
Hope distributed the ball to its hitters – four players terminated points – as the Flying Dutch jumped out to a 16-11 lead.
Another three-point run pulled Albion within two, 19-17, but that was as close as the Britons would get.
Hope scored nine of the first 10 points in the second set, and it scored six in a row to build an 11-6 lead in the third.
Outside hitters Kelsey Gustafson and Kate Winter led Albion with five kills apiece. Mackenzie Moore and Marie Pregenzer added four kills apiece.
Hope's McKenna Otto led all players with 10 kills.
Albion (10-8 overall and 3-3 against MIAA rivals) will travel to Ohio for its next four matches. The action begins Friday with matches against John Carroll University and Oberlin College.
