Britons survive five set match at Saint Mary's

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Grace VanDorn and Chloe Webber completed double-doubles and Taylor Rosenthal controlled the middle of the floor with 16 kills as Albion College escaped Saint Mary's College in a five set Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association volleyball match Tuesday night.

The scores were 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 11-25, 15-11.

Rosenthal collected four kills and a block assist and Marie Pregenzer added three kills in the decisive fifth set.  Pregenzer finished with 10 kills while hitting .381, nine digs and three block assists.

"It took us a little while to adjust, but our passing and defense came together in the end," Albion Head Coach Kristin de St. Aubin said. "Our middle blockers are always our go-to people, especially as they start to score, we're going to keep giving the ball to them.

"We got the result we wanted," she added. "We are still a team trying to figure out who we are and still be a true fundamentally sound team from the start of the match until the end."

Webber had the hot hand early, collecting 10 of her season-high 16 kills in the first two sets. She added 18 digs to complete her third double-double in as many matches and fourth of her first season at the collegiate level.

VanDorn dished out a season-high 49 assists to go along with 14 digs.

Albion also received a much-needed lift from Brielle Brown. Getting more time on the court as Albion plays without the services of Angela Adams, Brown sets season-highs with 18 digs and two aces.

Libero Monica Shuk contributed 14 digs and four assists and Jenna Khoury chipped in with 11 digs.

Game Notes

  • Rosenthal moved into third place on Albion's all-time list for kills. Rosenthall has 899 kills, moving past Lauren Outwater's total of 895.
  • VanDorn completed her 27th career double-double. That moves her into fifth on Albion's all-time list.

Albion, 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, returns home Saturday to host a MIAA match against Adrian College at 11 a.m. and a non-league contest against Capital University at 3 p.m.
