Lance Coleman was named head men’s track & field coach in the summer of 2010, after serving as an assistant coach for the Britons for 15 seasons. Albion combined the men's and women's track & field teams into one program in the fall of 2011 and Coleman was named head coach.

The 2017 outdoor season may have been Coleman's most successful of his seven campaigns as head coach. The Britons captured Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles in five events (Emilee Kinney in the 100 and 200 meters, Maicey Peterson in the pole vault, Jessica Shaw in the 10,000 meters and Nia Thomas in the long jump). The Britons also captured all-region status in five events (Angela Morrison in the heptathlon and 100-meter hurdles, Shaw in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters and Thomas in the long jump). Morrison (heptathlon) and Shaw (10,000 meters) advanced to compete in the NCAA Division III Championship.

Morrison also advanced to compete in the pentathlon in the 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship.

In addition, Chelsea Anthony and Kristin Nelson were selected as the MIAA's Most Valuable Field Performers in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Both advanced to compete in the NCAA Division III Championship. Anthony achieved honorable mention All-America status with a 14th place finish in the discus throw in 2012, while Nelson gained honorable mention All-America recognition with a 12th place finish in the heptathlon in 2013.

While an assistant coach, his focus was on coaching the Briton sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers.

During his coaching tenure at Albion, Coleman has been fortunate to work with some very talented student-athletes, including 37 MIAA champions, 47 all-MIAA selections, three MIAA most valuable performers and four MIAA record holders. Coleman’s student-athletes have also been successful at the national level with 17 qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships and six of them achieving NCAA Division III All-American status and one earning a national championship (Nick Morgan in the 110-meter high hurdles in 2004). Coleman was also part of the 2004 MIAA track & field championship squad.

A 1991 Albion graduate, Coleman earned eight varsity letters as a competitor in track & field and football. Coleman enjoyed a spectacular track & field career, earning seven MIAA individual titles (a three-time champion in the 100 meters, and a two-time champion in the 200 meters and 400 meter relay), four all-MIAA honors (1988-91), two MIAA MVP awards and two MIAA records (10.5 second in the 100 meters and 42.33 seconds in the 400 meter relay). Coleman also was a three-time All-American in the 100 meters from 1989-91. In football he earned first team all-MIAA honors in 1990 and was a part of MIAA championship teams in 1989 and 1990.

Coleman’s coaching philosophy includes cultivating positive, lifelong relationships with student-athletes while mentoring them for success in the competition, classroom and life.
