Albion finishes third in MIAA women's track & field meet

ALBION, Mich. – Layla Wilks took first place in the sprinting events and joined the winning 4x100-meter relay and Cassie Vince won her second distance event of the meet as Albion College secured a third place finish in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

Hope College edged Albion by 12 ½ points at the end of the meet. The Flying Dutch finished with 178 ½ points, while Albion finished with 171.

Wilks, the MIAA indoor track champion in the 60 and 200 meters, set winning times of 12.33 seconds in the 100 and 25.86 in the 200.

Albion came away with 26 points in the 100. Emilee Kinney was the runner-up (12.69), while Kimberly Barber was fourth and Ericka Coleman was sixth.

Albion added 24 points in the 200. Barber was third, Chalara Sutton was fourth and Kinney was sixth.

Barber, Wilks and Kinney were joined by Tyra Thomas-Spratley for the win in the relay. The Britons completed the race in 48.75, finishing nearly a second ahead of Adrian College.

Vince, the winner of the 10,000 meters on Thursday, came back to win the gold medal in the 5,000. She finished in 12:21.73, the 39th-fastest time in Division III so far this season. Vince finished about 13 ½ seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Nia Thomas finished second in the triple jump, soaring 37' 1". Barber (36' 8 ½") secured the bronze medal.

Barber and Thomas reversed the order to finish third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump.

Jessica Johnson (shot put, 40' 9 ¾") and Allison Butler (400 meters, 1:00.60) were second in their respective events and Megan Winkler (400 hurdles, 1:10.95) was third in her event.

Albion athletes will now turn their attention to meets in Illinois where the goal will be to achieving qualifying standards for the NCAA Division III Championship.
