ADRIAN, Mich. – Cassie Vince scored an easy victory in the women's 10,000 meters and sprinters Kimberly Barber, Layla Wilks and Allison Butler set themselves up for Friday finals in their events as the Albion College women had a successful opening day in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Vince owned her race from the start, setting a blistering pace that no one could keep up with. Vince completed her race in 37:35.36, a time that was 1:40 ahead of the second place runner. Allison Snyder claimed the bronze medal, crossing the finish line in 40:02.54.
Albion also picked up some points in the finals of field events contested Thursday.
- Barber and Nia Thomas finished third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump. Barber sailed 17' 6" to gain the bronze medal, with Thomas achieving a best jump of 17' 3 ¼".
- Tyra Thomas-Spratley finished eighth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4' 9".
In qualifying for Friday finals on the track, Barber set the fastest time in the 200 (26.61) and she was fifth in the 100 (13.18).
Wilks, the MIAA indoor track champion in the 60 and 200, set the fastest time in the 100 (12.76) and she will join Barber in the field for the 200 after setting a time of 27.17.
Albion will have four women in the field for the 100 and 200 races on Friday. Emilee Kinney won her preliminary heat in the 100 (13.20) to qualify third and Erika Coleman (13.34) also reached the final. Chalara Sutton and Kinney will join the field for the 200.
Albion will have three women (Allison Butler, Emily Kinser, and Thomas Spratley) in the 400 final, two (Megan Winkler and Hannah Almhiemid) in the 400 hurdles and 100 hurdles finals (Almhiemid and Smith) and Alicia Medrano in the 800 final.
