Strong Finish

HOLLAND, Mich. – Albion College scored at least 14 points in every individual swimming event on the final day of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships as it drives home with a solid fourth-place team finish in the meet.

Albion finished with 454 points. Calvin College (783) eked out a 35-point win over Hope College. Kalamazoo College (700) was third.

Four swimmers produced 30 points in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Laura Steavenson, one of the seniors completing her collegiate career, put up a fourth-place time of 18:16.66. Haley DeFeyter, Claire Wittkowski and Tess Haadsma, another senior, also scored.

The Britons kept piling on the points, scoring 19 in the 200 backstroke. Anna Hargrove reached the championship race, finishing sixth in 2:10.86. Haley Wallis and Jourden Burke scored in the consolation heat.

First-year student-athletes Sarah Kilbride and Hailey Sambor capped an impressive meets. Sambor swam to a fifth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.00) with Wittkowski in the consolation. Kilbride was sixth in the 200 butterfly with MacKenzie Chesley and Julia DiFiore in the consolation.

Albion had Molly Blank, Lauren Pawelec, Madison Vaive and Kylene Slocum score in the consolation heat in the 100 freestyle.
