Wolford makes the most of her moment

ALBION, Mich. – Soccer is a game decided by moments, and Albion College senior Emily Wolford picked the perfect moment to deliver her first goal of the season.

Wolford scored 3 ½ minutes into overtime, lifting Albion to a 2-1 result over Trine University before a large Homecoming crowd at Alumni Field.

The Trine back line wasn't able to get the ball to its midfield, leading to a buildup that finished in Wolford's winning goal.

"Everybody stepped up today," Albion Head Coach Eric Scott said, noting that the Britons had at least six first-year players on the pitch at one point. "Our attitude in training was good all week and it showed up in that moment."

The first half of the match featured scoring chances for both teams as Albion generated seven shots while Trine had six. Rayna Edwards scored Albion's first goal in the 32nd minute and Courtney Reece provided the equalizer for Trine about 3 ½ minutes later.

Albion asserted itself in the final 48 ½ minutes, adding seven more shots while Trine only had one the rest of the way.

Albion's control of the match was evident in that controlled possession 66 percent of the time. Most of the possession – 67 percent – was in the offensive half of the field.

Albion, winners of two in a row to improve to 5-3-1 overall, will play its next two matches at home. Next up for the Britons is a 7 p.m. Wednesday date against Alma College.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
