Britons bounced on late goal

ALBION, Mich. – Scoring chances were at a premium as Albion College and Coe College met for a non-league women's soccer match on Saturday.

After all, both teams were playing on consecutive days.

Coe took advantage of its scoring chance, getting a goal from Amanda Hiebert with five minutes to play as the Kohawks walked off Alumni Field with a 1-0 victory over Albion.

Rayna Edwards and Emily Brittain combined to take three shots in the first 25 minutes, but each of the attempts sailed high of the goal.

Clare Kelley placed a couple of shots on goal early in the second half, but Coe goalkeeper Alex Montalbano was up to the challenge.

Albion, which finished the opening weekend of the season with a 1-0-1 record, will play on consecutive dates at home again next weekend. The Britons host Greenville (Ill.) University next Saturday at 3 p.m. and Manchester (Ind.) University next Sunday at noon.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
