ALBION, Mich. – The Albion College women's soccer started Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action on the right foot with a 3-1 result over Saint Mary's College at the Davis Athletic Complex.
Albion set the tone from the start, getting goals from Emily Brittain and Samantha LaRocca in the first 11 ½ minutes. LaRocca completed Albion's scoring for the night with her second goal in the 39th minute.
Defensively, Albion never let Rose Stackhouse, the MIAA leader with eight goals and 19 points, and Madison Jurgovan, who is among the MIAA leaders with four assists, get any momentum. Stackhouse placed three shots on goal, but she did not factor in the scoring. Jurgovan may have touched the ball to get an assist on a goal by Alexis Hernandez with less than five minutes left.
"Saint Mary's has three good first-year players and we couldn't let them in the game quickly," Albion Head Coach Eric Scott said, adding starting forwards Brittain and Clare Kelley and midfielder Emily Wolford were especially eager to play. "It's nice to get three points in the conference standings."
Megan Bricely, the Albion goalkeeper who leads the MIAA in saves, collected seven more to raise her season total to 66.
Albion, now 4-5-1 overall, travels to Angola, Ind., on Saturday for a 4 o'clock match against MIAA rival Trine University.
