ALBION, Mich. – Injuries have forced Albion College to adjust its starting 11, and Head Coach Eric Scott credited athletic trainer Casey Donovan for helping to keep his squad patched together enough to score a 3-0 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Trine University at Alumni Field Saturday afternoon.
Clare Kelley scored a goal in each half – giving her three for the season – and Maggie Troost collected three saves to lead the Britons on the pitch. Alex Radzville also produced her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Scott said the result was the capstone on a challenging week for the Britons. Albion came away with a 1-0 loss to MIAA-leading Hope College on Wednesday while taking care of academic responsibilities at the middle of the semester.
"I'm proud of the group," Scott said. "We played the No. 1 team in conference, midweek, during midterms. All we talked about was getting through today and then we get break. Casey and her team did a great job of patching us together so we could play today. We will come back Tuesday and train, and hopefully more student-athletes will be available than we had today.
"Clare took her chances well," Scott added. "She's not afraid to shoot. I was happy that she found a way to get the ball in the net. I thought her activity up front was good and it caused problems for Trine's center backs."
Albion, 7-4-1 overall and 6-3-1 against MIAA rivals, has a week to prepare for its noon Saturday kickoff against Adrian College at Alumni Field.
