Britons Fall to Division II Opponent, Lopez has Career-Night

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Albion College women's lacrosse team was dropped by Division II opponent Frostburg state on Friday, Mar. 6 in a high-scoring affair, 25-21. For the Britons (3-2, 0-0), they're averaging almost 16 goals per game through the first five contests.

The Frostburg State Bobcats dominated the opening 10 minutes of play scoring seven-straight unanswered goals. Sophomore Chrystelle Lopez broke ended the scoring drought for the Britons scoring off of a free-position shot. After another score by the Bobcats, the Purple and Gold went on a 5-0 run with goals from five different players to cut the lead to 8-6.

The Britons continued to chip away at the deficit going on a three-goal tear to tie the game at 9 apiece with 6:40 to go in the first half. A top-shelf dart from senior Darcy Muns and a great connection from Lopez to sophomore Destiny Okon highlighted the scoring stanza. However, Frostburg finished the period scoring three out of the last four goals to gain a 12-10 edge going into halftime.
The Bobcats expanded their lead in the second half of action scoring a pair of goals in the first two minutes. Halfway through the second, Lopez netted three goals in a row for the Britons to trail 19-15. Senior Kate Mullins also produced a hat trick in the second half to keep Albion within striking distance. Despite scoring three times in the final five minutes, the Britons were unable to complete the comeback, falling to the Bobcats 25-21.

Lopez had a phenomenal night scoring eight goals and two assists for ten total points. The Birmingham product's offensive display earns her a new career-high in goals and points. But that's not all – her eight goals place her tied-third all-time in goals in a single game and tied-third in total points in a single game. And her superiority at the draw tonight ties for second all-time in a single game (12). Okon finished the day with four goals, one assist, and seven draw controls. Mullins and junior Abby Sheklow both recorded three goals on the night. Senior goalie Jenina Villabroza registered nine saves.

Albion outpaced Frostburg State 36-32 in shots on goal and in groundballs 42-39.

The Britons return home as they host Siena Heights University on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at 5 p.m. at the Davis Athletic Complex.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu
