Lopez, Robinson are the MIAA WLAX Players of the Week

Albion College had the opportunity to select the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Players of the Week in women's lacrosse after securing the league's tournament championship last Saturday.

The Britons selected a pair of first-year student-athletes – midfielder Chrystelle Lopez and goalkeeper Alexis Robinson – for the awards.

Lopez, who hails from Van Nuys, Calif., produced seven goals and four assists in the tournament to gain the Offensive Player of the Week award. An all-MIAA second team pick for the season, Lopez piled up five goals and an assist as Albion edged Hope, 16-14, in the championship game. She also helped Albion maintain possession against Hope, collecting four groundballs and controlling the draw twice.

Robinson, from Agoura Hills, Calif., made 20 saves to gain the Defensive Player of the Week award. The MIAA Rookie of the Year, Robinson stopped nearly 57 percent of the shots she faced (making a season-high 13 saves on 23 shots) in the Britons 13-10 semifinal victory over Calvin College.

As MIAA Tournament champions, Albion received an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship. Albion will meet Catholic University in a first round game to be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance, Ohio. Admission ($6 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students and $2 for children ages 3-12) will be charged at the gate.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
