Illinois Wesleyan spoils Albion's home opener

ALBION, Mich. – A powerful Illinois Wesleyan University squad took a 21-7 victory over Albion College in non-league women's lacrosse action.

Claudia Richman scored four goals, Sam Bidlack added three and Claudia Richman chipped with two as Illinois Wesleyan scored nine in a row to build a 10-1 lead with seven minutes left in the first half.

Albion mounted a rally with goals from Abby Sheklow, Destiny Okon and Carly Schwarz to cut the deficit to 10-4, but that was as close as the Britons would get.

Bidlack (five goals), Richman (four goals), Landry Elliot (three goals and two assists) and Grainne Kelly (two goals and two assists) were the Illinois Wesleyan scoring leaders. The Titans improved to 8-2 with the victory.

Schwarz finished with two goals and one assist for Albion. Okon also had two goals. Kate Mullins, Darcy Muns, and Sheklow all produced one goal.

Albion, 4-3 overall, will play two contests next weekend. The first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest of the season is at Trine University on Saturday. The Britons next home game is Sunday, March 31 against Augustana College.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
