Sharing the game of lacrosse

The Albion College women's lacrosse program celebrated one of its favorite days of the year Jan. 19.

It joined student-athletes from the men's lacrosse team in teaching skills to nearly 60 local children who braved a storm that blanketed the area with six inches of snow to turn out for a free clinic sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The clinic served as a kickoff to the season as the Britons started practice Tuesday.

As the team tweeted to its account it also allowed the student-athletes the opportunity to be kids again.

"When the team gets together a few days before the season starts you can really feel the excitement in the air," Carly Schwarz, a sophomore captain from Clinton Township, Mich., said. "At the SAAC clinic you could especially feel it because we were in an environment where we were playing and teaching lacrosse.

"It's very important for us to be sharing the game of lacrosse with the kids because it's not one of the popular sports that many kids are introduced to," she added. "This clinic allows us to open up their world to the fun of lacrosse early. I really loved playing defense on the little girls who were with me, they really loved beating me to the goal, and their happiness and excitement filled me with joy! Beside the fact that I want these kids to have actually learned some of the basics of lacrosse, I also just hope that they remember the fun they had. Hopefully my teammates and I, as well as the men's team, were able to maximize the fun that they all had."
