Second half surge sends Carden to milestone victory

ADRIAN, Mich. – Albion College outscored Adrian College by 15 in the second half Wednesday night to hand Head Coach Doreen Carden a milestone victory.

Carden, in her 19th season as the Britons mentor, picked up her 300th career victory as the Britons pulled away from Adrian, 65-47, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.

Albion's 23-14 lead with 2:40 left in the first half melted to 26-23 at halftime.

Rain Hinton scored nine points and Rebecca Ross tacked on six off the bench as Albion outscored Adrian, 17-9, in the third quarter.

Hinton added 12 more in the fourth quarter to finish with 26, one shy of her season-high. The junior from Fort Wayne, Ind., scored on 8-of-19 shots from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. She pulled down 12 rebounds to complete her fourth double-double of the season.

Emily Bernas was Albion's other double figure scorer, finishing with 16 to push her career total to 991. She added three rebounds, three steals and an assist.

Albion, now 11-2 overall and 3-1 against MIAA rivals, will play its next two games at home. The Britons host Olivet College for a 3 o'clock Saturday game and Alma College next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu
