Women's Basketball scores season-opening victory

ALBION, Mich. – Evelyn Wischmeyer scored 23 – three shy of her career-high – and Elena Welker made an impressive collegiate debut by adding 16 as Albion College tipped off the women's basketball season with a 76-51 victory over Case Western Reserve University at Kresge Gymnasium.

Albion seized control by shooting 50 percent in the second quarter as it outscored the Spartans, 22-10. Welker scored 10 points in the quarter, making all five of her shots.

Wischmeyer hit a pair of 3-point baskets in the third quarter to blunt any momentum Case Western tried to build.

Wischmeyer finished the day shooting 9-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

In all, 11 of the Britons scored in the game.

Albion will hit the road next weekend, traveling to Angola, Ind., for non-league games against Ohio Wesleyan University and Marietta College.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu
