Bernas, '20, checks in from summer internship

Emily Bernas, '20, is finding a variety of projects is enjoyable as she does marketing, market research, event planning and accounting during a summer internship with Eskywell in Clarkston, Mich.

A two-time all-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association second team pick for the Albion College women's basketball team, Bernas has a knack for numbers. After all, she is just 140 points shy of becoming the 10th Briton to achieve the milestone of 1,000 career points.

"Every day is different because I come in and get a new project. I could be researching demographics for a boutique or creating marketing strategies for an art show," Bernas, a business major who is a member of Albion's Carl A. Gerstacker Institute for Business and Management, wrote in an e-mail. "Something that has been challenging to me has been working with real numbers for a business. It is wild to think that if I mess up that it is not just a grade but the business that would be suffering. I end up asking a lot of questions and I have learned to not be afraid to speak up."

Eskywell is a consulting firm for small business, and Bernas appreciates the casual atmosphere at the worksite.

Emily Bernas "I am allowed to wear jeans every day and we even have dogs come into work," she said. "I have learned what I like to do. I went into this internship not knowing what I enjoyed doing in the business world. I found out that I love marketing and event planning."

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
