Britons take momentum into MIAA Tournament

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Emily Bernas and Rain Hinton combined for 23 points in the second half as Albion College pulled away for a 71-58 victory over Saint Mary's College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action.

With the victory, Albion concludes the regular season at 18-7 overall and 10-6 in the MIAA. Albion has the No. 3 seed for the MIAA Tournament and will host Saint Mary's in a first round contest at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Bernas provided a pair of baskets to lead a 6-0 run as Albion gained a 41-35 lead in the third quarter.

Bernas tacked on five more points and Hinton and Jami Hubbard scored as part of a 9-0 run as Albion extended the margin to 50-38.

Saint Mary's pulled within four, 54-50, on Caroline Macius' 3-point basket early in the third quarter.

Albion didn't surrender the lead as Bernas scored an old-fashioned three-point play, Hubbard added a jumper, Hinton scored a layup and Maija Gillum dialed in from long range to make the score 64-52 midway through the fourth quarter.

Hinton produced her fourth double-double of the MIAA season with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Bernas (10), Gillum (12) and Hubbard (10) also scored in double figures for the Britons.

Of Note

  • It was Hinton's sixth 20-point game of the season. She was 9-of-13 from the field.
  • Bernas also had an efficient game, shooting 7-of-14 from the field and making all three of her attempts from the free throw line.
  • Sam Carter dished out six assists.
