Albion unable to climb out of deep hole

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Gabby Timmer scored seven of her 25 points to lead Calvin College on a 16-7 run over the final seven minutes of the second quarter. The Knights built a 12-point halftime lead and hung on to earn a 74-69 victory over Albion College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action at Van Noord Arena.

Calvin led by as many as 18 early in the third quarter before Albion ripped on an 11-0 run to trim the deficit to seven midway through the frame. Evelyn Wischmeyer and Jami Hubbard hit two shots apiece for the Britons during the rally.

Hubbard knocked down a 3-point basket and Rain Hinton sank a jumper on consecutive possessions and Hubbard later tacked on a free throw as Albion forged a tie at 60 midway through the fourth quarter.

Albion led 69-68 on Bernas' 3-point6 basket with less than two minutes to play.

Timmer helped close out the win for Calvin with a pair of layups. She made 10-of-14 shots from the field and stuffed the box score with 20 rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.

Three Albion starters scored in double figures.

  • Bernas finished her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds
  • Hinton shot 50 percent (8-of-16) to finish with 18 points. She fell a rebound shy of a double-double
  • Hubbard also shot 50 percent from the field (4-of-8) to finish with 10 points. She also fell a rebound shy of a double-double while collecting two steals and a block.
