Albion secures road victory

OLIVET, Mich. – Four starters scored in double figures as the Albion College women's basketball team took a 64-43 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Olivet College.

Albion improved to 14-3 overall and it maintained third place in the MIAA as the second half of league play started.

Both teams shot 33 percent, but Olivet turned the ball over 25 times.

Maija Gillum and Jami Hubbard produced the baskets as Albion finished the first quarter on an 8-2 run to lead 20-14.

Emily Bernas knocked down a pair of free throws and Rain Hinton added two free throws and a layup as Albion extended the margin to 26-14 less than two minutes into the second quarter.

Albion led by at least nine the rest of the way.

Hinton led Albion with 14 points and three steals. She also pulled down seven rebounds.

Bernas and Evelyn Wischmeyer added 11 points each. Bernas secured a game-high nine rebounds.

Brroke Schutte finished with 10 points and a team-high three assists. Hitting all six of her free throws, Schutte scored in double figures against a MIAA rival for the first time this season.

Of Note

  • Olivet is the first Division III team to score less than 50 points against the Britons this season. Great Lakes Christian (38) has the lowest output by an Albion opponent this season.
  • Albion yielded six points in the fourth quarter. Olivet shot 15 percent (2-of-13) and committed seven turnovers.

Next Up

Albion will play at home twice next week. The nationally-ranked squad from Hope College visits Kresge Gymnasium on Wednesday for a MIAA game and Finlandia University provides the opposition for a non-league game on Friday night.
