Britons complete holiday trip with a victory

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Albion College placed five players in double figures as it completed its holiday trip with an 89-68 victory over Maryville College.

Albion improved to 10-2 with the victory. After the drive home, the Britons will prepare for a pair of home games against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals. Adrian College will provide the opposition for a 3 o'clock Saturday contest, while the squad from Calvin College visits Kresge Gymnasium Wednesday, Jan. 9, for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Rain Hinton scored seven points in the third quarter as Albion pulled away by outscoring Maryville, 27-16.

Albion scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to forge a 46-28 lead. Emily Bernas produced five points on two baskets and a free throw, Hinton added a basket and free throw and Evelyn Wischmeyer knocked down a jumper.

Albion led by as many as 28 in the fourth quarter before settling for the 21-point victory.

Of Note

  • Maija Gillum provided a boost off the bench. Playing 23 minutes, she knocked down 5-of-9 shots from 3-point range to finish with a career-high 19 points. Gillum stuffed the box score with eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
  • Bernas led the starting unit with 18 points. She made 6-of-12 shots from the field.
  • Hinton finished with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals.
  • Jami Hubbard scored in double figures for the third time this season. She was 4-of-8 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line for 12 points. Hubbard also secured seven rebounds, two steals and a block.
  • Sam Carter scored in double figures for the fifth time this season. She was 3-of-5 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line for 11 points. Logging 26 minutes off the bench, she dished out three assists.
  • Albion has scored 80 or more in its last three games. The 89 points at Maryville was Albion's second-highest total of the season and most against a Division III opponent this season. The Britons scored 100 in the Dec. 1 victory over Great Lakes Christian College.
  • Albion attempted 31 free throws, making 22. Both were the second-most for the Britons in a game this season.
  • Albion collected 16 steals, matching the third-most in a game this season.
  • Albion's five blocks also matched the second-most in a game this season.
  • In addition to the game at Maryville, Albion's holiday trip included practice and watching a game at the University of Tennessee and a tour of Pigeon Forge.
