Balanced Britons shoot down Comets

ALBION, Mich. – All five Albion College starters scored in double figures as the Britons survived a 42-point effort by Breauna Rivoli-Johnson for an 81-68 victory over Olivet College Wednesday night.

Jami Hubbard led the Albion starters with 18 points, matching her career high. She hit 7-of-11 shots from the field, including both of her attempts from three-point range.

Emily Bernas (16 points, seven rebounds and five assists) and Evelyn Wischmeyer (14 points, five rebounds, six assists) stuffed the box score for Albion. Rain Hinton was an efficient 6-of-7 from the field for 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. Sam Carter chipped in with 11 points and six steals.

Maija Gillum was the hot shooter in the first quarter, knocking down 3-of-4 shots from the field as Albion jumped out to a 21-15 lead.

Hubbard tacked on two baskets and Carter knocked down her only three-point basket of the night as Albion extended the margin to 32-22 with three minutes left in the second quarter. The Britons went on to hold a 39-28 lead at halftime.

Wischmeyer contributed two baskets and Hubbard dialed up from long distance as Albion opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run to forge its largest lead of the night, 47-30.

Olivet got as close as seven points in the fourth quarter, but Albion shot 82 percent from the free throw line (18-of-22) to prevent the Comets from coming all the way back.

"I thought we did a good job of handling the pressure," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said of how her team committed just 14 turnovers against an Olivet defense that picked up full court on defense. "We did a good job of controlling the game.

"We played good team basketball with a lot of players contributing," she added.

Albion, 5-1 overall and 1-0 against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals, will take a break from league play Saturday afternoon with a game at Great Lakes Christian College.
