Women's Basketball opens season with 10-point victory

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Emily Bernas knocked down a 3-point basket from the corner with 1:13 left and that proved to be the dagger as Albion College held on for a 68-58 victory over Defiance College in non-league women's basketball action.

Albion led by as many as 13 early in the fourth quarter, but the margin was just five when Sam Ervin knocked down a 3-point shot for Defiance with 1:46 left.

Albion led most of the way, though it had trouble pulling away from Defiance.  Amanda Larson hit a jumper and Sam Carter tacked on a pair of free throws as the Britons extended the margin to double figures, 58-48, late in the third quarter.

Rain Hinton produced 15 points and nine rebounds for Albion before fouling out with three minutes to play.

Hinton received support from Bernas (12 points, nine rebounds), Evelyn Wischmeyer (10 points, eight rebounds, and five assists) and Maija Gillum (eight points, four rebounds).

Albion continues non-league play on the road this weekend when it travels for a tournament at Manchester University. The Britons have a 5 o'clock Friday game against Muskingum University.
