ALBION, Mich. – Albion College made four field goals over the final 15 minutes as its upset bid against 12th-ranked Trine University fizzled.
Trine outscored Albion, 17-5, in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 67-50 victory in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball game.
Tierra Orban scored a layup to pull Albion within one, 41-40, with 5 ½ minutes to play in the third quarter.
Montana Martin hit a pair of shots and Brandi Dawson and Kayla Freeman scored two points apiece as Trine extended the lead to 50-45 at the end of the third.
Trine started the fourth quarter on a 12-0 run.
Rain Hinton scored four points as Albion led 14-8 with three minutes left in the first quarter. Trine rallied to forge a tie at 14 at the end of the quarter.
Brittany Leutz hit a 3-point basket and Emily Bernas tacked on two free throws as Albion gained a 19-14 lead early in the second quarter. Trine again answered to tie the score at 28 at halftime.
Dawson led all players with 22 points.
Leutz knocked down 4-of-5 shots from the field to finish with 15 for the Britons. Hinton chipped in with 12.
Albion finished the first round of league play with a 5-3 record. The Britons, 11-5 overall, have a 3 o'clock home game against Olivet College on Saturday.
