Britons advance to tournament title game

DELAWARE, Ohio - Emily Bernas hit a pair of 3-point shots as Albion outscored Carnegie Mellon, 19-3, in the third quarter to pull away for a 53-38 victory in the opening round of the Bishop Classic/Hoops for Hope at Ohio Wesleyan University Friday night.

Albion, now 8-3 on the year, will square off against Muskingum University, a 73-69 overtime winner over Ohio Wesleyan, in the tournament's title game at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Albion trailed 17-7 after the first quarter, but the Britons outscored the Tartans in each of the last three quarters (13-8 in the second and 14-10 in the fourth).

"We settled in after that quick start," Coach Doreen Carden said about Carnegie Mellon's 8-0 run to start the game. "I was proud of how we responded and played a full 40 minutes. Our defense picked up and I thought we executed really well on that end."

The Britons trailed 25-20 at halftime, but limited Carneig Mellon to just one field goal in the third quarter.

Bittany Leutz led the Britons with 12 points and Evelyn Wischmeyer added 11 points and nine rebounds.
