ALBION, Mich. – Albion College held an opponent to less than 30 points for its first time since 2011 as it earned a 69-29 victory over Kalamazoo College at Kresge Gymnasium.
Albion completes its stretch of December games against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals with a 3-1 record. The Britons only setback was a three-point loss to fourth-ranked Hope College last Saturday.
Albion's next four games are against non-league rivals, starting with a Tuesday date at Spring Arbor University. The Britons return to MIAA action with a Jan. 6 date at Adrian College.
"We are getting better," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "We used a lot of players which helps us because we are going to use them later on in the season. They performed off the bench.
"We are 7-1 overall and I am happy with that," Carden added. "We will treat these upcoming games as if they were league games because the opponents are similar to what we'll see in conference."
Emily Bernas scored nine of her season-high 18 points in the second quarter as Albion pulled away after leading by three, 10-7, at the end of the first.
Kalamazoo scored the first basket of the second quarter to cut the Albion lead to one, 10-9, but Albion answered by scoring the next 12 and it never looked back.
"We adjusted the press, took away some things and got some easy baskets," Carden said. "And they got tired in the second half."
Jami Hubbard added 18 points and nine rebounds, both career highs for the junior, and Brooke Schutte chipped in with 11 off the bench.
