Women's Basketball Improves To 2-0

ALBION, Mich. – Twelve Britons scored as Albion College dispatched Defiance College, 75-47, in a non-league women's basketball game at Kresge Gymnasium.

While two games is a small sample size, Head Coach Doreen Carden says the Britons have done a good job of coming together as a team.

"We have more depth than the past," Carden said. "I feel like we're doing a really good job of jelling. We've come a long way since the first day of practice. I like the toughness in us. I like our communication."

Albion surrendered the first basket, but it never trailed after Sam Carter knocked down the first of two shots from the line to gain a 3-2 lead. Carter scored three early points and Maija Gillum and Tierra Orban added baskets as Albion got out to a 7-2 start.

Defiance came into the game fresh off scoring 78 points in a Wednesday loss to the Trine University squad picked to win the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship.

Against the Britons, however, Defiance committed eight turnovers in falling behind 23-12 at the end of the first quarter.

"I was really happy with the way we played defensively," Carden said. "We focused on the players we needed to key on and made everything tough for them."

Offensively, Albion was efficient. The Britons connected on 59 percent (26 of 44) of their shots from the field in the first three quarters. Rain Hinton produced 15 points off the bench, while Evelyn Wischmeyer led the starting unit with 13.

Albion will take its 2-0 record to River Forest, Ill., Tuesday for a non-league contest against Dominican University.
