ANGOLA, Ind. – Shooting 28 percent from the field, Albion College didn't have enough offense to keep up with No. 1 seed Trine University in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Tournament semifinal Friday night.
Hayley Martin and Brandi Dawson combined for 30 points as Trine held off a spirited Albion effort, 57-42. The Thunder advance to the Saturday night title game against Calvin College.
Albion completed a fine season at 18-8.
"We did a good job of hanging in there," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "We cut the deficit to four points, but we couldn't overcome it. We didn't shoot well, but give credit to their defense.
"To hold Trine to 57 points is pretty good," Carden added. "Their defense was just a little better."
Trailing by as many as 13, Albion rallied to cut the deficit to four with 5 ½ minutes to play. Emily Bernas produced a pair of layups and Erin Nelson and Olivia Savage tacked on three points apiece as Albion trailed 44-40.
Albion had an opportunity to keep within striking distance, but it missed its next four shots and turned the ball over three times. Hayley Martin scored seven points as Trine extended the margin to 53-40.
Oreyana Curry led Albion with 14 points to finish her collegiate career with 1,038.
Bernas was Albion's other double digit scorer with 10.
