Zgoda Nets Her Second MIAA Player of the Week Award Of The Season

Emily Zgoda broke the Albion College women's basketball records with 13 3-point field goals and 44 points in the Britons victory over Olivet College last Wednesday, and she was rewarded Monday with her selection as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Player of the Week.

It is the second time Zgoda has been honored by the MIAA this season.

After learning of her acceptance into a graduate program for occupational therapy earlier in the day, Zgoda walked into Kresge Gymnasium with confidence and hit the most 3-point shots by a Division III player and tied for most by a player in any NCAA division this season. Her 44 points placed her in a tie for fourth most by a Division III player this season.

Though her first attempt from 3-point range was an air ball, Zgoda had the confidence to keep shooting. She knocked down 5-of-6 attempts in the second quarter, and by the time she connected on 6-of-8 in the third quarter, she had everyone in the gym, including the men's teams from Albion and Calvin College waiting for their game to follow, encouraging her to set and fire.

"It's different when you have support," Zgoda, an exercise science major, said.

Averaging nine points through 13 games against MIAA rivals, Zgoda is shooting 41 percent from 3-point range (29-of-72).

Albion has just four games remaining in the regular season, starting with a Wednesday night non-league date with Rochester College. Zgoda and her classmates Oreyana Curry and Olivia Savage will be recognized prior to the Britons 3 o'clock Saturday home game against Alma College.
