ALBION, Mich. – The Albion College women's basketball program celebrated individual and team milestones as it opened the month of February with a 108-48 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Olivet College.
Senior guard Emily Zgoda broke the school records for most points (44) and 3-point field goals (13) in a game. She misfired on her first attempt from behind the arc, but she quickly found the range by hitting 5-of-6 in the second quarter and 6-of-8 in the third.
Zgoda matched Brittani Rizzi of Kentucky State for the most 3-point baskets by an NCAA player in any division this season. Her 44 points for the game places her in a tie for fourth among Division III players in a game this season.
In the process, Doreen Carden picked up her 250th victory as head coach at Albion. Now in her 17th season, Carden boasts a record of 250-166, for a .601 winning percentage.
"It's a tribute to the players," Carden said of her milestone victory. "They are the ones getting the wins."
Senior guard Oreyana Curry finished with eight points to climb to ninth place on the school's all-time scoring list. The senior from Dearborn Heights has totaled 955 points to move past Darian Payne, who collected 952 during her career which spanned 2013-16.
Finally, Albion broke the school record for points in a game, eclipsing the 106 scored in a victory over Tri-State University on Jan. 8, 2005.
Overall, the victory was a positive response after the Britons suffered a 24-point setback at Trine University last Saturday.
"The loss to Trine was a wakeup call," Carden said. "It was great to see how we bounced back."
Almost lost in the milestones was how the Britons continued to hustle despite the big lead. First-year guard Emily Bernas led the starters with 12 points. Guards Olivia Savage and Tierra Orban added nine points apiece, Paige Ruesch contributed eight points, Jami Hubbard had seven and Mackenzie Fairbanks chipped in with six.
Albion (15-5 overall and 8-4 against MIAA rivals) plays at home again Saturday with a 3 o'clock matchup against Adrian College.
