ALBION, Mich. - Albion College shot 79 percent in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 85-61 victory over Kalamazoo College in its final game of the first round of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action.
Oreyana Curry produced six points to lead Albion on a 14-4 run over the first five minutes quarter. The rally extended the Albion lead to 73-50.
Albion led by as many as 27 in the final minutes of the game.
"Kalamazoo did a good job of hanging around, but we have shown the ability to wear teams down," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said after the Britons improved to 12-4 overall and 5-3 against MIAA rivals.
Curry produced 16 points in just 16 minutes on the court. She received support from Emily Zgoda, who buried three 3-point shots in the third quarter, to finish with 15. Emily Bernas, Evelyn Wischmeyer and Brittany Leutz all chipped in with 10.
"It was good to have balanced scoring," Carden said. "We don't want to have to count on Oreyana."
Albion begins the second round of league play with a Saturday game at Saint Mary's (Ind.) College. The Britons return to Kresge Gymnasium next Wednesday for a matchup against seventh-ranked Hope College.
Game Notes
- Curry moved into 12th place on Albion's all-time scoring list. With 923 points to her credit, she is two behind Gretchen Humes (1989-1993) for 11th and three behind Susan Lang (1985-89) for 10th.
- Zgoda made four 3-point shots in the game. It was the fourth time this season she's made at least four from long distance this season.
- Albion shot 53 percent from the field for the game. It was Albion's second-best shooting performance of the season (it was 55 percent in the victory over Illinois Tech). The Britons are 3-0 when shooting at least 50 percent.
