Fourth Quarter Rally Fizzles

Fourth Quarter Rally Fizzles

ALBION, Mich. – Calvin College ripped off a 13-0 run over a three minute span of the third and fourth quarters to erase a seven-point deficit and hand Albion College a 63-58 at Kresge Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Oreyana Curry knocked down a jumper to push Albion's lead to 39-32 late in the third quarter.

Calvin did much of its scoring from the free throw line, as Ali Spayde produced five points on an old fashioned 3-pont play and a layup, Lauren Goldthorpe hit four from the line, and Anna Timmer and Nicole Meyer each split a pair from the line.

Bre Luurtsema scored a layup on Calvin's first possession of the fourth quarter to give her team a 45-39 lead.

Albion rallied to cut the margin to one – Emily Bernas scored from 3-point range and Curry tacked on a pair of free throws – but it never got a lead because Calvin was able to break the pressure defense for easy baskets.

Albion controlled the game early as five players scored in a 13-0 blitz over the first 6 ½ minutes.

Calvin recovered, scoring the game's next 12 points, and neither team led by more than seven the rest of the way.

Curry scored 18 to push her career scoring total to 907. She moved past Sarah Grill (1996-2000) for 13th place on Albion's all-time scoring list. She stands 10 behind Melody Janson's (1981-1985) 12th place total of 917.

Emily Bernas chipped in with 12 points, and Erin Nelson stuffed the box score with nine points, five rebounds, and six assists.

Four Calvin starters scored in double figures, led by Goldthorpe with 26. Timmer added 13, and Luurtsema, who fell a rebound short of a double-double, contributed 11. Spayde finished with 10.

Albion, 11-4 overall and 4-3 against MIAA rivals, completes the first round of league play with a 6 p.m. Wednesday home game against Kalamazoo College. It's scheduled for internet broadcast on the Briton Sports Network.
