Britons Roll Over Illinois Tech

ALBION, Mich. - Albion College shot a season-best 55 percent from the field and senior guards Oreyana Curry and Emily Zgoda combined for 41 points in the 99-28 victory over the Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday.

Zgoda scored 10 of her 20 points in the second quarter as Albion outscored the Scarlet Hawks, 28-2, in taking a 54-14 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Albion never let up, outscoring Illinois Tech 23-7 in the third quarter and 22-7 in the fourth.

"We played 40 minutes hard," Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "We never let up. They ran a zone defense so it was good to work on some things. I thought we moved the ball well. I hope this provides a confidence boost for some of our young players that got a lot of minutes."

Curry produced her seventh game of the season with at least 20 points, finishing with 21. She hit 8-of-10 shots from the field and both of her opportunities from the free throw line.

With 865 points, Curry passed assistant coach Melissa Shaw for 14th on Albion's all-time scoring list. Next up for the senior from Dearborn Heights is Sarah Grill, who produced 890 while playing for the Britons from 1996-2000.

Zgoda hit 7-of-14 shots from the field for her second 20-point performance in the last three games.

First-year forward Evelyn Wischmeyer had a nice all-around game with nine points, six steals and five assists.

At 10-3, Albion has matched the number of wins it had last season. The Britons will look to continue their winning ways Wednesday when they travel to Alma College for a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest.

"We are looking forward to (the remaining schedule), but it's going to get harder from here on out," Carden said.

"It's awesome (to match last year's win total)," she added. "It shows the returning players worked hard and the first-year players have bought in and are contributing a ton for us."
