Surging Into Final Examinations

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College is surging into final examinations after scoring an 81-48 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Saint Mary's College.

The Britons shot 48 percent from the field – its second best performance of the season – as it improved to 5-1 overall. Albion has started 5-1 or better in seven of the 16 years with Doreen Carden as head coach.

Seven Britons scored during a 20-4 run over the final seven minutes of the first quarter. The Britons led 23-9 after the first quarter and never looked back.

"It's nice to get a win before exams," Carden said. "We played hard and shot better than we did (in a 74-70 overtime loss to John Carroll University on Wednesday)."

Oreyana Curry was impressive in the third quarter, scoring seven of her game-high 20 points. She hit all five of her free throw attempts in the quarter. For the game, Curry shot a season-best 67 percent (6-of-9) from the field and hit all seven of her attempts from the line.

"The first five minutes of the third quarter, we came out, scored early and didn't let them back in," Carden said.

A senior from Dearborn Heights, Curry has three 20-point games this season.

Curry received support from three players who scored in double figures. Catie Neary knocked down 5-of-8 shots for 11 points, and Brittany Leutz and Tierra Orban were both 4-of-6 from the field for 10 points apiece.

Kelsey Ronan led Saint Mary's with 13 points.

Albion will come out of final examinations with a home game against MIAA rival Trine University at 3 p.m. next Saturday.
