ALBION, Mich. - Albion College grabbed 34 offensive rebounds Wednesday night, but that was not enough to cover up for a season-worst 32 percent shooting from the field in a 74-70 overtime loss to John Carroll University.
It's the first loss of the season for Albion (4-1) which will start Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action at 3 o'clock Saturday with a home game against Saint Mary's College.
Neither team controlled the game that included 15 ties and 20 lead changes.
"We played hard and rebounded like crazy," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said after the Britons finished with 22 more rebounds than John Carroll. "We just couldn't make shots. For us to score 70 points and give ourselves a chance to win shooting as poorly as we did shows us what kind of year we can have if we start hitting consistently."
Oreyana Curry hit a 3-point basket with 28 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime tied at 62. The senior from Dearborn Heights finished with a season-high 26 points and seven rebounds.
Emily Bernas scored six of her 18 points in overtime, including a 3-point basket that pushed Albion to a 70-69 lead with a minute and a half left.
John Carroll scored the final five points of the game from the free throw line. Katlyn Spahar hit a pair, Chelbi Graham knocked down 2-of-4 and Shmoo Pryor sank the second of two shots down the stretch. Pryor led the Blue Streaks with 21 points, while Spahar added 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Sarah Sprecher provided a boost off the bench with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Albion's Evelyn Wischmeyer produced her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
