Late Scoring Drought Proves Costly

CINCINNATI, Ohio – A three-minute scoring drought at the end of regulation proved costly as Albion College completed action in the Mount Saint Joseph Tip-Off Classic with a 72-68 loss to Heidelberg University.

Albion led 60-55 when Brett de Bear knocked down a 3-point basket with 2:55 left, but the Britons turned the ball over on their next two possessions and misfired on three shots.

Heidelberg sent the game to overtime when Megan Miller scored a 3-point basket with 49 seconds to play and Kyra Dorney tacked on a pair of free throws with six seconds left. Miller finished with a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Tanner Johnson provided Albion with a brief lead in overtime, sinking a pair of free throws on the first possession. Heidelberg responded by scoring the next seven points and Albion never got closer than four the rest of the way.

Albion led much of the first half and its biggest margin was a 16-8 edge 6 ½ minutes into the contest. de Bear and  Johnson produced six points apiece in the early going. Albion settled for a 37-35 lead at halftime.

The lead changed six times in the second half and neither team led by more than five.

de Bear led all players with 20 points. Johnson added 13. de Bear and Johnson pulled down eight rebounds apiece. Nugent finished with 12 points.

Albion will make its home debut at 6 p.m. Tuesday when it challenges Dominican University.
