The non traditional season in the fall gives the Albion College softball coaching staff the opportunity to experiment with the batting order or where certain individuals are playing in the field.
With 23 players on the roster, the fall practice sessions were gained added importance as the coaches evaluated the talent.
"Having 23 players on the roster was a neat experience because those additional players will help with depth, especially pitching," Leigh Ann LaFave, who is in her fifth season as head coach of the Britons, said, adding that setting a competitive environment where players paid attention to detail and fundamentals in practice while building team chemistry was the overall goal of the fall season. "The additional players on the roster will give us more options and I'm hopeful it will lead to more wins in the spring."
LaFave said the only thing she would have liked to see is her team play against outside competition. The Britons fall games scheduled for Sept. 30 were wiped out by rain.
"We did fairly well in intrasquad scrimmages, but we needed to see outside competition," LaFave said.
Albion will resume practice in January as it prepares for its spring semester season. The Britons hope opener is scheduled for March 31, a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Kalamazoo College.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
