Softball team battles in MIAA doubleheader

ALBION, Mich. – Despite traveling home with two losses, the Albion College softball team can be proud of the battle it gave 10th-ranked Trine University Wednesday afternoon.

Game One: Trine 10, Albion 1

Don't let the final score fool you. Albion scored its run in the first inning, and the lead held up until Trine scored one in the third. Trine added a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and six in the sixth.

Skyler Herman and Morgan Deckrow drew walks in the first inning. Herman scored from second base when Estacia Martinez reached base on an error in the outfield.

Albion had a scoring chance in the third. Herman led off with a double, and the Britons loaded the bases with two out when Deckrow walked and Martinez was hit by pitch. Trine wiggled out of the jam when Rebecca Rodriguez hit a fly ball to center field.

Grace Connolly and Lauren Beougher hit singles in the sixth, but a base running mistake kept the Britons from scoring.

Game Two: Trine 4, Albion 0

Trine scored its runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings.

Albion had a scoring chance in the second when Martinez and Beougher hit consecutive singles with one out. The next two batters struck out.

The Britons also had runners in scoring position in the sixth when Kacy Rossi singled and Eryn VanderVlucht doubled with one out. The next two batters put the ball in play, but could not come through with a hit.

On Deck

Weather permitting, Albion will host Hope College for a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dempsey Field.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu.
