Defiance spoils the Albion softball home opener

ALBION, Mich. – Defiance College spoiled the Albion College softball home opener Wednesday afternoon.

Albion had the winning run on base with one out in the seventh, but it was unable to collect the clutch hit as Defiance hung on for a 5-4 victory in game one.

Defiance slugged four extra base hits in claiming a 10-0 five-inning victory in game two.

Game 1: Defiance, 5, Albion 4

It was a back and forth game, with four lead changes.

Estacia Martinez hit a RBI single to score Morgan Deckrow as Albion took the early lead with a first inning run.

Defiance scored two in the third and Albion responded with two in the fifth. Felicia Maximiuk hit a RBI single and Deckrow picked up a RBI despite an error charged to the shortstop.

Defiance regained the lead with two runs in the seventh. The key play was a wild pitch that scored Kalin Hubble from third base.

Savannah Spring, who came on as a pinch runner in the bottom of the seventh for Albion, scored when the Defiance pitcher made an error trying to throw Maximiuk out at first base. The next batter, Deckrow, drew a walk as Albion had the winning run on base. The next two batters grounded out to end the game.

Game 2: Defiance 10, Albion 0

Defiance scored in every inning to finish the doubleheader sweep.

Albion's first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader of the season is scheduled for Saturday at Calvin College.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
