Softball team splits doubleheader

BLUFFTON, Ohio – Albion College came an out shy of sweeping a non-league softball doubleheader from Bluffton University on Thursday.

Instead, the Britons had to settle for a 2-1 victory and a 10-9 loss.

The split leaves Albion at 7-9 on the year heading into Sunday games at Wilmington (Ohio) College.

Game 1: Albion 2, Bluffton 1

Rebecca Rodriguez cleared the center field fence for her third homerun of the season and Claudia Sbaschnik scored in the fifth inning and that was all the offensive support pitcher Morgan Deckrow would require.

Rodriguez led off the fifth inning with her homerun and Sbaschnik followed with a double to center field. Sbaschnik scored when the next batter, Savannah Spring, singled and the Bluffton pitcher made a bad throw to first base.

Deckrow threw the complete game, allowing six hits and a walk. She struck out four.

Game 2: Bluffton 10, Albion 9

Albion led 8-0 in the third.

Eryn VanderVlucht hit a two-run double, Lauren Beougher followed with a RBI single and Sbaschnik collected a RBI with a groundout in the first.

Albion tacked on three more runs in the second as Grace Connolly hit a two-run double and Rodriguez added a RBI single.

Skyler Herman's sacrifice fly scored Sbaschnik in the third.

The Britons led 9-4 in the fifth when Sbaschnik scored on Herman's double.

Bluffton scored a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh. The shape of the seventh inning turned when the leadoff batter, Casey Clark, reached base on a dropped pop up. Albion was able to retire the next two batters, but Sydney Bowen coaxed a walk and the tying and winning runs scored on a double by Caylin Morstadt.
