Britons Break Through

OLIVET, Mich. – The Albion College softball team achieved its first victory over a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival in three years and it nearly completed its first doubleheader sweep of a conference rival in five years.

Albion defeated Olivet College, 7-4, in the first game of its league doubleheader Wednesday, and the Britons seventh inning rally fell short in a 2-1 loss in game two.

Game One

Kara Suwarsky and Ashley Witkowski drew walks with the bases loaded and Mackenzie Fairbanks added a RBI single as the Britons scored three times in the sixth to pull away.

Albion tacked on another insurance run in the seventh as Savannah Spring scored when Kara Suwarsky reached base on an error.

Leadoff hitter Angela Hoffsis collected four hits and scored three times. Suwarsky and Wittkowski produced two RBI apiece. Rebeka Enders lifted a sacrifice fly to drive in a run in the third.

Pitcher Brianna Charron (3-4) allowed an earned run and 10 hits in throwing her fourth complete game of the season.  She received help from the defense that turned a pair of double plays.

Game Two

Albion finally got to Olivet pitcher Gracie Boyle in the seventh inning. Charron and Suwarsky hit back-to-back singles to bring the winning run to the plate with no outs.  Fairbanks drove in the run when she reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Charron.

Olivet scored a run in each of the first two innings and Boyle carried the Comets from there, limiting the Britons to one hit through six innings.

On Deck

Albion (7-19 overall and 1-7 against MIAA rivals) will play its next two league doubleheaders on the road. The Britons begin to rack up the miles Saturday in a doubleheader at Trine University.
