Softball Team Falls On Opening Day

BRIGHTON, Mich. - Albion College was an out away from opening the softball season with a victory over Concordia University. Instead, the Cardinals scored two on a double with two-out in the bottom of the seventh to stun the Britons, 4-3, at the Legacy Center.

Albion scored its three runs in the first. Angela Hoffsis, who reached base on an error to leadoff the game, scored on Rebecca Rodriguez's groundout to shortstop. The next four Albion batters reached base, and Madison McConnell singled to score two runs.

Albion had scoring chances later in the game, stranding two runners in the third and fifth and a runner at second in the fourth.

Concordia scored runs in the first and second and Albion continued to hold a 3-2 lead until the seventh. The Cardinals got the winning run on base immediately in the seventh as Jenna Lowney singled and Cierra Woods walked. They scored on a double by Samantha Capuzzi.

Madison Kortas pitched for the Britons. She allowed five hits and three walks in her Albion debut.

In its second game of the day, Albion took a 12-1 loss to Indiana Wesleyan University. Hoffsis collected two hits and drove in the run for the Britons.

Albion has a couple of weeks to work on the things it learned from opening day. The Britons will travel to Florida for spring break, and those games begin March 5 when they take the field against Rockford and Swarthmore.
