Britons Nearly Pull Upset

ALMA, Mich. – Monica Brugnoni and Kaitlyn Hotchkin nearly delivered Albion College to an upset of 16th-ranked Alma College in the first game of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball doubleheader.

Hotchkin produced two hits, and she was stranded at third base in the second inning, and Brugnoni yielded seven hits and three walks in the Britons 1-0 loss in game one.

Alma had a base runner in every inning except the second, but Brugnoni, backed by an error-free defense, kept the Scots from scoring. Katie McClure led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single. Lauren Sabuda, Alma's center fielder re-entered the game. She advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when the next two batters hit infield singles.

Alma scored six times in the fourth to pull away for a 7-0 victory in game two. Brugnoni hit a double and Hotchkin produced a single for Albion's hits in the game.

Albion is scheduled to play its home opener on Monday when Siena Heights University visits for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Dempsey Field.
