Britons Blank Spring Break Rivals

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Albion College ran its winning streak to four games, its longest such run since 2012, with shutout victories over Wisconsin Lutheran College, 2-0, and Swarthmore College, 3-0, during spring break action at the CenturyLink Sports Complex.

It's the first time since 2008 for the Britons to throw consecutive shutouts. Albion had three consecutive shutouts during spring break with wins over Wilmington College (7-0), New Jersey City University (1-0), and Salem State College (3-0).

Albion 2, Wisconsin Lutheran 0

Albion cooled off a Wisconsin Lutheran team that came in with a 5-1 record.

Monica Brugnoni fired a six-hitter for the first shutout of her collegiate career and the first for Albion since a 4-0 victory over Kalamazoo College on April 9, 2014. Her 10 strikeouts were a career-high and she walked two. The Warriors stranded a runner at third in the fifth and had two runners on base in the seventh.

Albion scored its runs in the first. Julia Anderson hit a leadoff single and Elena Luce was hit by a pitch with one out. They advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch and scored on Brugnoni's two-out single to left field.

The Britons threatened to score in the third. Erica Wagner hit a one-out double and she advanced to third on Luce's bunt single. The next two Briton batters struck out.

Albion 3, Swarthmore (Pa.) 0

Lauren Oppliger fired a six-hitter with four strikeouts for the first shutout of her collegiate career.

Albion scored all of its runs in the fifth. Erica Wagner, who collected three of Albion's eight hits, scored on Kaitlyn Hotchkin's single. Brugnoni singled to score Hotchkin and Elena Luce.

Wagner slugged a pair of doubles and Hotchkin produced a pair of singles.

On Deck

Albion, 6-4 overall, will complete its spring break schedule Friday morning with games against Nazareth (N.Y.) College and the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth at the North Collier Regional Park in Naples.
